Ten years ago, Micro$oft released Win95 - while I didn't change over to it for another 2 years or so, August 24 1995 marked the start of my professional IT career with a 4 week internship at REHAU AG computer services. I was just prior to my last year of secondary school and had an unbelieveably good time with the guys and girls in Rehau, Germany. Back then the company had everything running from PC XT with DOS to 486 with Win 3.11 and some of the gurus had OS/2 on their machines.
Vor zehn Jahren brachte Micro$oft Win95 heraus - obwohl ich den Wechsel fuer zwei weitere Jahre scheute, stellt der 24.08.1995 den Beginn meiner beruflichen EDV Karriere dar. Ich absolvierte damals ein 4-woechiges Praktikum bei der REHAU AG im PC Benutzerservice. Ich befand mich zwischen der 9. und 10. Klassen Realschule und hatte ne unglaublich tolle Zeit mit den Jungs und Maedels in Rehau. Damals war alles im Einsatz - vom PC XT mit DOS bis hin zu 486ern mit Win 3.11 und einige der Gurus hatten sogar OS/2 im Einsatz.
I was at the time helping to perform a company-wide Virus check for the MediaMarkt Virus that was threatening systems at the time. My colleague was a 'real' intern from TU Ilmenau - how I admired this guy for being a computing student. We had good fun walking around from PC to PC with all kinds of floppies (3.5 / 5.25", DD, HD) and manually checking every single machine for viruses.
Damals half ich dabei, eine Virusueberpruefung saemtlicher Systeme wegen des grassierenden Mediamarkt Virus durchzufuehren. Mein Kollege war ein 'echter' Praktikant von der TU Ilmenau - hab ich den Typ beneidet um sein IT-Studium. Wir hatten jede Menge Spass, sind von PC zu PC gerannt und haben mit allen erdenklichen Floppy-Formaten (3,5 / 5,25 Zoll / DD/HD) jeden Maschine einzeln geprueft.
I still remember how the first guy installed Win95 on a machine and my reaction was just "That is it? That's the miraculous system to crush OS/2?" Thats nothing but a better dosshell.exe ;) I didn't like it (never learnt to like it anyway). Anyway, scary to think that it is already 10 years ago, some of my friends were only in their early teens at the time :-P
Ich kann mich erinnern, als der erste von uns Win95 auf einer Testmaschine installierte war meine Reaktion nur "Wie bitte? Das soll das Monster-system sein, das OS/2 von der Bildflaeche fegen wird? Ist doch nichts weiter als ne bessere dosshell.exe" ;) Ich hab's damals nicht und auch spaeter nie gemocht. Wie auch immer, erschreckend wenn man bedenkt dass mancher meiner heutige Freunde damals gerade mal in ihren fruehen Teenagerjahren waren.
This first internship got me my first 'real' PC (8086 10MHz Turbo) and made me switch from my East-German robotron CP/M 2.2 machine to the world of DOS and eventually Windows. Not much later though (1997) I got me my first copy of SuSE Linux (version 5.0 at the time).
Dieses erste Praktikum bescheerte mir meinen ersten 'echten' PC (8086 10 MHz Turbo) und brachte mir den Wechsel von meinem Ossi-robotron CP/M Rechner in die Welt von DOS und spaeter Windows. Nicht viel spaeter jedoch legte ich mir schon die erste SuSE Linux distro zu (Version 5.0 seinerzeit).
